• A citizen of India; or
• A subject of Nepal; or
• A subject of Bhutan; or
• A Tibetan refugee who arrived in India before 1 January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India; or
• A person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma), Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Candidates belonging to the categories other than citizens of India must possess a Certificate of Eligibility issued by the Government of India, wherever required.

IBPS Clerk Eligibility Criteria 2026 – Educational Qualification

• A Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India or any equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government is required.
• The candidate must possess a valid mark sheet or degree certificate showing that he or she is a graduate and must indicate the percentage of marks obtained in Graduation while applying online.
• The prescribed educational qualification must be completed by 21 August 2026. The application-window extension to 28 August 2026 does not extend this qualification cut-off.
• Computer Literacy: Operating and working knowledge of computer systems is mandatory. Candidates should have a Certificate/Diploma/Degree in computer operations or computer language, or should have studied Computer/Information Technology as one of the subjects in High School, College or Institute.
• Candidates applying for a particular State/UT should be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the specified or opted local language of that State/UT.
• Matriculate Ex-Servicemen who do not possess the regular civil graduation qualification may be eligible if they have obtained the Army Special Certificate of Education or a corresponding certificate in the Navy or Air Force after completing not less than 15 years of service in the Armed Forces, subject to the detailed IBPS rules and cut-off date.

IBPS Clerk Eligibility Criteria 2026 – Age Limit

The prescribed IBPS Clerk Age Limit for CRP CSA-XVI is:

• Minimum age limit: 20 years
• Maximum age limit: 28 years
• Age calculated as on: 1 August 2026

A candidate must have been born not earlier than 2 August 1998 and not later than 1 August 2006, with both dates inclusive.

The maximum age of 28 years applies to General and EWS category candidates before any applicable upper-age relaxation.

IBPS Clerk Number of Attempts 2026

IBPS Clerk Number of Attempts 2026 is an important eligibility-related topic for candidates who have appeared in the examination before or are planning to apply for the first time. The Institute of Banking Personnel Selection does not prescribe a fixed numerical limit on the number of attempts for the IBPS Clerk examination. Candidates can apply multiple times as long as they satisfy the prescribed age limit, educational qualification, nationality and other eligibility conditions mentioned in the official CRP CSA-XVI notification.

In simple terms, previous attempts do not make a candidate ineligible for the next IBPS Clerk recruitment cycle. A candidate who could not qualify for the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination or provisional allotment in an earlier recruitment cycle can apply again. However, the candidate must remain within the applicable age limit on the cut-off date specified in the latest notification.

Is There Any Attempt Limit for IBPS Clerk 2026?

No fixed attempt limit has been prescribed for the IBPS Clerk or Customer Service Associate recruitment examination. Unlike some competitive examinations where candidates are permitted only a specific number of attempts, IBPS Clerk eligibility is primarily controlled by the candidate’s age and other prescribed conditions.

Therefore, a candidate’s IBPS Clerk previous attempts are not usually counted to decide whether the candidate can submit a new application. It does not matter whether the candidate appeared only in Prelims, qualified for Mains or reached the provisional allotment stage. If the candidate remains eligible under the current notification, a fresh application can be submitted.

IBPS Clerk Attempts and Age Limit

Although there is no fixed IBPS Clerk attempt limit, candidates cannot continue appearing after crossing the applicable upper-age limit. For CRP CSA-XVI, the basic age requirement is 20 to 28 years as on 1 August 2026. Candidates must also satisfy the date-of-birth range specified in the official notification.

This means that General and EWS candidates can apply only while they fall within the prescribed basic age range. Candidates belonging to eligible reserved or special categories may receive upper-age relaxation according to the applicable rules. Such relaxation may allow them to apply for additional recruitment cycles, but it should not be treated as a separately granted number of attempts.

Do Previous IBPS Clerk Attempts Affect a New Application?

Previous IBPS Clerk attempts do not normally affect a candidate’s eligibility to submit a new application. A candidate is not disqualified merely because they have appeared in the examination several times. Similarly, failing to qualify in an earlier attempt does not reduce the candidate’s chances of being considered in a future recruitment cycle.

Every recruitment cycle is treated separately. Candidates must complete a fresh registration, provide the required information, upload documents and pay the applicable application fee for the current recruitment. Marks secured in an earlier Preliminary or Main Examination are not carried forward to the new recruitment cycle.

Does Appearing Only in Prelims Count as an Attempt?

Since IBPS does not prescribe a fixed number of attempts, there is no practical restriction based on whether a candidate appeared only in the Preliminary Examination. Even if a candidate appeared in Prelims but did not qualify for Mains, they may apply again in the next cycle, provided they continue to satisfy all eligibility requirements.

The same principle applies to candidates who qualified for Mains but were not selected for provisional allotment. Their previous result does not prevent them from applying again.

Does Absence from the Examination Count as an Attempt?

If a candidate submits the application form but remains absent from the examination, it does not create a future attempt-related restriction because there is no fixed IBPS Clerk Number of Attempts. However, the application fee paid for that recruitment cycle is generally not refunded merely because the candidate did not appear.

Candidates should still avoid submitting unnecessary applications. They should apply only when they meet the eligibility conditions and genuinely intend to participate in the recruitment process.

Are SBI Clerk and IBPS RRB Clerk Attempts Included?

No. Attempts made in SBI Clerk, IBPS RRB Office Assistant, IBPS PO, SBI PO or any other banking examination are not added to the candidate’s IBPS Clerk attempts. These are separate recruitment examinations conducted under different notifications and eligibility conditions.

For example, appearing for SBI Clerk several times does not reduce a candidate’s eligibility to apply for IBPS Clerk. However, the candidate must separately meet the age, educational qualification and other requirements of each examination.

Do Reserved-Category Candidates Receive Extra Attempts?

IBPS does not provide a separately defined number of additional attempts to reserved-category candidates. Instead, eligible candidates may receive relaxation in the upper-age limit. This age relaxation can indirectly provide more opportunities because the candidate may remain eligible for additional recruitment cycles.

Candidates claiming age relaxation must select the correct category in the application form and possess valid supporting certificates in the prescribed format. If the required certificate is unavailable, invalid or inconsistent with the application details, the relaxation claim may be rejected during document verification.

Can an Ex-Serviceman Apply Multiple Times?

An eligible Ex-Serviceman may apply for IBPS Clerk more than once because there is no fixed attempt limit. However, Ex-Servicemen candidates must satisfy the definition, age-concession formula, re-employment conditions, reservation requirements and documentary conditions provided in the official notification.

The availability of Ex-Servicemen reservation does not guarantee selection. Candidates must qualify for the required examination stages, secure the necessary marks and produce valid eligibility documents during verification.

Important Conditions for Repeated Attempts

Candidates planning to appear again should check the following conditions before submitting the application:

• The candidate must meet the prescribed age requirement on the official cut-off date.
• A recognised graduation degree or equivalent qualification must be available by the specified date.
• The candidate must satisfy the nationality requirements.
• The selected State or Union Territory’s local-language requirement must be fulfilled.
• Category and age-relaxation certificates must be valid and in the prescribed format.
• Information about previous examination appearances must be entered correctly if requested in the application form.
• The candidate must not be debarred by IBPS or another competent authority.

Submitting incorrect information about age, category, qualification or previous candidature may result in cancellation. Therefore, candidates should rely on the current CRP CSA-XVI notification instead of using rules from an older recruitment cycle.

IBPS Clerk Eligibility Criteria 2026 – Work Experience

No prior work experience is required to apply for IBPS Clerk 2026. Fresh graduates who fulfil the prescribed age, educational qualification, nationality, computer-literacy and local-language requirements are eligible to apply.

Work experience does not replace the mandatory educational qualification unless a specific provision of the detailed notification, such as the prescribed Ex-Servicemen qualification route, applies to the candidate.

IBPS Clerk Eligibility Criteria 2026 – PwBD Reservation

As per Section 34 of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016, eligible persons with benchmark disabilities can claim reservation subject to the categories, suitability conditions and documentation prescribed by IBPS and the Government of India.
