Official Website: Institute of Banking Personnel Selection
The IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Eligibility 2026 rules apply to eligible defence personnel seeking the Customer Service Associate (CSA) post under CRP CSA-XVI.
Eligible Ex-Servicemen can receive service-based age relaxation. Certain Matriculate Ex-Servicemen with at least 15 years of Armed Forces service may also meet the educational requirement through the prescribed Army, Navy or Air Force certificate instead of regular civil graduation.
This guide explains the IBPS Clerk ESM age limit, educational qualification, 15-year service rule, computer knowledge, local language, serving personnel conditions and documents required. Age relaxation, educational eligibility and reservation are separate checks; qualifying for one does not automatically establish the others.
IBPS Clerk ESM: Key Eligibility Dates
Use the separate cut-off dates prescribed for CRP CSA-XVI when checking your records.
- Age Calculation Date: 1 August 2026
- Educational Qualification Cut-off: 21 August 2026
- Special ESM Educational Certificate: Dated on or before 21 August 2026
- Serving Personnel: Check the applicable engagement/release deadline of 20 August 2027 and the correct proforma.
Do not use the application deadline or examination date in place of the prescribed eligibility cut-offs. Read the serving personnel conditions separately.

Who Can Apply Under the Ex-Servicemen Category?
A candidate claiming Ex-Servicemen (ESM) benefits must meet the Government of India definition and the conditions in Clause B.IV of the notification. Service and discharge records must support the claim. The nationality/citizenship requirements in Clause B.I also apply.
Nationality: Besides Indian citizens, Clause B.I permits subjects of Nepal/Bhutan; Tibetan refugees arriving in India before 1 January 1962 for permanent settlement; and persons of Indian origin migrating for permanent settlement from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia or Vietnam. These non-Indian-citizen categories require a Government of India certificate of eligibility.
DESM means Disabled Ex-Servicemen, not dependents of Ex-Servicemen. Dependents of servicemen killed in action are covered by separate notified conditions; they do not receive the ESM relaxation in age or educational qualification.
DESM definition: Clause B.IV(ii) covers an Ex-Serviceman disabled during service in the Union Armed Forces in operations against the enemy or in disturbed areas. Confirm that your service records support this definition.
Ex-Servicemen should verify:
- ESM/DESM status and the applicable reservation category;
- Exact date of birth and qualifying Defence Service;
- Educational qualification and certificate dates;
- Discharge/release conditions;
- Computer literacy and supporting records;
- The selected State/UT and its specified local language; and
- The required ESM certificates and proformas.
IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Age Limit 2026
The normal IBPS Clerk/CSA age limit as on 1 August 2026 is:
- Minimum Age: 20 years
- Maximum Age: 28 years before applicable relaxation
The unrelaxed date-of-birth range is 2 August 1998 to 1 August 2006, both dates inclusive. Eligible ESM candidates should apply the relevant upper-age concession rather than treating the normal birth-date range as their final eligibility limit.

IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Age Relaxation 2026 – Understand the service-based relaxation before calculating ESM eligibility.
IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Age Relaxation 2026
The notified upper-age relaxation for eligible Ex-Servicemen/Disabled Ex-Servicemen is:
For Disabled Ex-Servicemen belonging to SC/ST, the notification specifies actual Defence Service + 8 years. The ESM provision is subject to a maximum age of 50 years.
Category-based relaxation: Clause B.II, Note (i), allows SC/ST/OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) relaxation cumulatively with only one of the other listed relaxation categories. Read that note together with the applicable ESM/DESM row and the 50-year cap; do not add every concession together.
IBPS Clerk ESM Age Relaxation Example
- Age on 1 August 2026 = 40 years
- Actual Defence Service = 15 years
- Age Relaxation = 15 + 3 = 18 years
- Normal Upper Age = 28 years
- Relaxed Upper Age = 28 + 18 = 46 years, below the 50-year cap
The candidate satisfies the age condition in this example, subject to all other requirements. The 50-year cap does not make every Ex-Serviceman eligible up to age 50.
Educational Qualification for IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen 2026
The normal educational route requires a Degree (Graduation) in any discipline from a university recognised by the Government of India, or an equivalent qualification recognised by the Central Government.
The final result must have been declared on or before 21 August 2026. Candidates using this route must also possess a valid graduation marksheet or degree certificate when registering. Merely appearing in the final examination does not establish eligibility. Keep the university or institution record showing the result-declaration date.
Graduation percentage: For the graduation route, enter your percentage to two decimal places, using total marks across all subjects and semesters/years divided by total maximum marks, multiplied by 100. For CGPA/OGPA, use the university’s conversion rule and retain its supporting certificate. Clause B.VI does not prescribe a separate minimum graduation percentage.
The special route for eligible Matriculate Ex-Servicemen is explained below. Its certificate and service conditions must be checked separately.
Can an Ex-Serviceman Apply Without Graduation?
Yes — Certain Ex-Servicemen Can
The special educational provision is available to eligible Matriculate Ex-Servicemen meeting all the prescribed certificate, service and cut-off conditions.
An Ex-Serviceman without the normal civil graduation qualification may qualify when the candidate:
- Is a Matriculate Ex-Serviceman;
- Has completed at least 15 years of Armed Forces service as on 21 August 2026;
- Has obtained the Army Special Certificate of Education, or the corresponding Navy/Air Force certificate, after completing the required service; and
- Holds that certificate dated on or before 21 August 2026.

IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Qualification 2026 – Check Graduation or the applicable special ESM educational route.
Fifteen years of service alone is not enough: the prescribed educational certificate is also required. Conversely, this 15-year condition belongs to the special educational route; it is not a universal minimum-service condition for every ESM candidate applying with recognised graduation. ESM status must still satisfy the notified definition.
Is Army Graduation Certificate Valid for IBPS Clerk?
Check the exact name and nature of your certificate rather than relying only on the informal term Army Graduation Certificate.
The special provision names the Army Special Certificate of Education or the corresponding Navy/Air Force certificate. Every certificate issued during defence service should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a civil graduation degree.
Compare your certificate with Clause B.VI and retain the service records supporting that educational route. For a differently named certificate, seek clarification from the competent issuing authority and recruiting bank rather than assuming acceptance.
Computer Knowledge Requirement for Ex-Servicemen
Operating and working knowledge of computers is mandatory. Candidates must meet an accepted route such as:
- A Certificate, Diploma or Degree in computer operations/computer language; or
- Computer/Information Technology studied as a subject in High School, College or an Institute.
A separate computer certificate is not required for every candidate when the prescribed subject-study route is already satisfied. Keep the relevant marksheet or educational record as evidence.
ESM age relaxation and the special Armed Forces educational route do not remove the computer-literacy requirement.
IBPS Clerk Local Language Requirement for Ex-Servicemen
Candidates must meet the local-language proficiency requirement for their selected State/UT. Check the specified languages in Annexure III and the language opted in the application.
The candidate should be able to:
- Read the opted language;
- Write it;
- Speak it; and
- Understand it.
Who Can Get Exemption from the Local Language Test?
Candidates producing a Class 10 or higher marksheet/certificate proving that they studied the specified/opted language are not required to take the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT), subject to verification of that proof.
Other candidates must qualify in the LLPT conducted after the Main examination/provisional allotment and before joining. Failure to qualify makes a candidate ineligible for appointment. ESM status alone is not a language-test exemption.
Can Serving Defence Personnel Apply for IBPS Clerk?
Serving Armed Forces personnel may claim the notified ESM provision only if they meet the prescribed engagement, certificate and release conditions. The applicable deadline is 20 August 2027.
- Serving during the initial engagement: The Specific Period of Engagement (SPE) must end on or before 20 August 2027. Submit Proforma B from the competent authority and the Proforma C declaration.
- Serving on extended assignment: Candidates who have completed their initial engagement and are on extension must submit Proforma D.
- Release and joining: Selected candidates in both categories must be released on or before 20 August 2027 and comply with the allotted bank’s joining instructions. Keep the prescribed certificates ready.
Serving Personnel Note:
For the Proforma B/C route, the prescribed release letter and self-declaration are also required at joining. The later release deadline does not extend the educational qualification or special-certificate cut-off. Check Clause B.IV and the document checklist in Clause K(x).
Can an Ex-Serviceman Claim ESM Benefit After Joining a Civil Job?
An Ex-Serviceman who has already secured a Central Government Group C or D job may receive the prescribed ESM age relaxation for another higher-grade/cadre Group C or D recruitment, but cannot ordinarily claim Ex-Servicemen reservation for a second occasion.
The notification provides an exception for eligible direct-recruitment applications submitted before joining the first civil employment. To claim the permitted benefit for those applications, the candidate must give the employer a date-wise self-declaration/undertaking as soon as they join the first civil employment.
Do not treat age relaxation and reservation as interchangeable benefits. Apply the notified re-employment conditions to your employment and application history.
Documents Required for IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen 2026

IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Documents Required 2026 – Illustrative image only. Follow the applicable document checklist and bank instructions below.
Image clarification: Items shown in the illustration, such as a domicile certificate, must not be treated as compulsory for every candidate. Use the notification’s document list and any additional instructions issued by the allotted bank.
Keep the applicable original documents and self-attested photocopies ready. The required set depends on whether you are retired/released, still completing engagement, or serving on extension.
- Retired/released candidates: Proforma A, discharge certificate/pension payment order and documentary proof of the last/present rank, including substantive and acting rank where relevant, as listed in Clause K(x)(a). Read the Proforma A clarification below.
- Serving candidates: Proforma B and C, release letter and self-declaration, where applicable.
- Extended-assignment candidates: Proforma D.
- Service and discharge records supporting ESM/DESM status and qualifying service.
- Class 10/matriculation certificate and accepted date-of-birth proof.
- Graduation marksheets and degree/provisional certificate for the normal educational route.
- Army Special Certificate of Education or corresponding Navy/Air Force certificate for the special educational route.
- Computer-literacy and local-language evidence, as applicable.
- Valid photo identity proof and the submitted application printout.
- Applicable category/disability certificates in the prescribed formats.
- Original employer NOC for candidates covered by Clause K(xi), including Government, quasi-Government and public-sector employment.
- Other records required by IBPS or the allotted bank.
Proforma A clarification: Clause B.IV mentions Proforma A when a discharge certificate/booklet is unavailable, while Clause K(x)(a) lists it among joining documents for retired/released candidates. Check both provisions and the allotted bank’s document instructions; do not assume that the discharge book alone completes the requirement.
For the service-specific document process, see the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Documents guide.
Document Verification Warning
Claim ESM age relaxation, reservation or the special educational qualification only with valid supporting documents. An application, examination result or provisional allotment does not by itself confirm eligibility. The allotted bank verifies the records before appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen Eligibility 2026 rule?
Candidates must meet the notified ESM definition, age, education, computer-literacy and local-language requirements. Age relaxation, the special educational route and reservation are separate checks supported by the relevant documents.
What is the age limit and age relaxation for IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen in 2026?
The normal age requirement is 20–28 years as on 1 August 2026, before applicable relaxation. Eligible Ex-Servicemen receive relaxation equal to their actual defence service plus 3 years. For Disabled Ex-Servicemen belonging to SC/ST, the stated provision is defence service plus 8 years, subject to the prescribed maximum age of 50 years. The 50-year ceiling is not an automatic upper age limit for every candidate; individual eligibility depends on service length and applicable category rules.
Can an Ex-Serviceman apply for IBPS Clerk without a graduation degree?
Yes, under the prescribed special educational provision. A Matriculate Ex-Serviceman must hold the Army Special Certificate of Education or the corresponding Navy or Air Force certificate obtained after completing at least 15 years of Armed Forces service. For CRP CSA-XVI, the qualifying service condition must be met by 21 August 2026, and the certificate must also be dated on or before that date.
Is every Army-issued graduation certificate accepted for IBPS Clerk eligibility?
No. Candidates should not assume that every Army-issued educational certificate automatically replaces a recognised graduation qualification. The special ESM provision specifically refers to the Army Special Certificate of Education or the corresponding Navy or Air Force certificate, together with the prescribed service and qualification conditions.
Is 15 years of service compulsory for every Ex-Serviceman applying for IBPS Clerk?
The 15-year service condition applies to candidates relying on the special Matriculate Ex-Servicemen educational provision. A candidate applying with a recognised graduation degree is assessed under the normal educational route. However, that candidate must still independently satisfy the applicable ESM definition, age requirements and other recruitment conditions.
Is a separate computer certificate compulsory for IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen?
Computer literacy is mandatory, but a separate computer certificate is not compulsory for every candidate. The requirement may also be met through an accepted computer diploma or degree, or by studying Computer or Information Technology as a subject in school, college or an institute. Candidates must retain suitable documentary proof.
Do Ex-Servicemen have to take the IBPS Clerk Local Language Proficiency Test?
Ex-Servicemen must satisfy the local-language requirement for their selected State or Union Territory. Candidates with a Class 10 or higher mark sheet or certificate showing that they studied the specified or opted language can receive the prescribed test exemption. Other candidates must qualify the Local Language Proficiency Test before joining; ESM status alone does not provide an exemption.
Can serving Armed Forces personnel apply under the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen provision?
Yes, subject to the prescribed engagement, release and joining conditions. For CRP CSA-XVI, the relevant SPE completion cut-off is 20 August 2027. Serving personnel covered by this provision require Proforma B and the Proforma C declaration. Personnel who have completed their initial engagement and are on an extended assignment require Proforma D. Applicable release documents and declarations must also be produced
Can an Ex-Serviceman claim ESM benefits after joining a government civil job?
Age relaxation and reservation must be considered separately. The prescribed age relaxation may remain available for another higher-grade or cadre Group C or D Central Government recruitment, but ESM reservation is generally not available for a second occasion. An exception may apply to eligible applications submitted before joining the first civil employment, subject to the required date-wise declaration and notification conditions.
Which documents are required to establish IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen eligibility?
Candidates should keep their application printout, date-of-birth proof, photo ID, qualification documents, computer-literacy proof, local-language evidence and applicable category certificates. Depending on service status, discharge or service records, PPO, rank proof, the applicable ESM proformas, release letter and declarations may also be required. Follow the allotted bank’s document-verification instructions.
