IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026 includes an Online Preliminary Examination, Online Main Examination and provisional allotment. After allotment, the allotted bank completes eligibility/document verification and, where required, the qualifying Local Language Proficiency Test before joining. Ex-Servicemen candidates receive reservation or relaxation only when they satisfy the prescribed conditions; there is no direct selection or exemption from the examinations.

The recruitment commonly called IBPS Clerk is officially conducted as CRP-CSA-XVI for Customer Service Associates. Prelims is scheduled for 10 and 11 October 2026, and Mains for 27 December 2026.

Quick Answer: ESM candidates must qualify Prelims to appear in Mains. Prelims marks are not used for final merit. Provisional allotment is based on Main Examination marks, State/UT-wise and category-wise merit, bank preference, reported vacancies and eligibility conditions. There is no interview. Provisional allotment is not an offer of employment.

IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026 Stages

  1. Online Preliminary Examination: qualifying and shortlisting stage.
  2. Online Main Examination: marks count for final merit/provisional allotment.
  3. Provisional Allotment: based on merit-cum-preference, category and vacancies.
  4. Eligibility, identity and document verification: carried out by the allotted bank.
  5. Local Language Proficiency Test: a marks-based qualifying test after Mains/provisional allotment but before joining, where applicable.
  6. Appointment formalities: medical fitness, joining and other requirements decided by the allotted bank.

Stage 1: IBPS Clerk ESM Prelims 2026

Prelims is an online screening test. Candidates must qualify in each of the three tests by meeting the cut-off marks decided by IBPS. IBPS then shortlists an adequate number of candidates in each category for Mains, according to its requirements. Prelims marks are not carried forward for final merit.

IBPS Clerk Preliminary Exam Pattern 2026

Section Questions Marks Time
English Language 30 30 20 minutes
Numerical Ability 35 35 20 minutes
Reasoning Ability 35 35 20 minutes
Total 100 100 60 minutes

Each section is separately timed. Prepare all three sections instead of depending completely on one strong subject. Read the IBPS Clerk syllabus and exam pattern.

Keep the Prelims documents for Mains: Download the call letter for each examination stage from IBPS; a call letter is not sent by post. If shortlisted for Mains, bring the authenticated/stamped Prelims call letter and authenticated/stamped ID-proof copy along with the Mains call letter and the other documents specified in the call letter and information handout. Keep these papers safely after Prelims. Follow the reporting time printed on your own call letter; it is earlier than the test start time.

Stage 2: IBPS Clerk ESM Mains 2026

Candidates shortlisted through Prelims appear for the Online Main Examination. To be considered for the next stage, a candidate must meet the minimum score in each test and the minimum total score prescribed by IBPS. Cut-offs depend on the available State/UT-wise vacancies. Only Main Examination marks count towards final merit; qualifying the examination alone does not guarantee provisional allotment.

2026 Pattern Alert: Do not use old tables showing 190 questions and 160 minutes. CRP-CSA-XVI Mains has 160 questions for 200 marks in 125 minutes.

Revised IBPS Clerk Main Exam Pattern 2026

Section Questions Marks Time
General/Financial Awareness 40 50 20 minutes
General English 40 40 35 minutes
Reasoning Ability 40 60 35 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude 40 50 35 minutes
Total 160 200 125 minutes

The latest table names the section Reasoning Ability; it does not list “Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude” as the current section title.

Negative Marking in IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026

For every wrong answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. There is no penalty for an unanswered question. Since questions may carry different marks in Mains, do not describe the penalty as a fixed 0.25 mark for every question.

Does ESM Reservation Change the Exam Process?

No. Eligible ESM/DESM candidates follow the same Prelims and Mains stages. Reservation operates within the notified vacancy and allotment framework; it does not guarantee selection, waive an examination or replace eligibility conditions.

Candidates must select the correct category and prove it with prescribed documents. Read the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen eligibility and reservation conditions and IBPS Clerk ESM State-wise vacancy.

Pre-Examination Training is preparation support: The notification includes Ex-Servicemen among the categories for which PET may be arranged online for a limited number of candidates. Eligible applicants who want this facility must have indicated it in the relevant application field. PET is not a qualifying examination, does not replace Prelims or Mains, and gives no right to selection.

IBPS Clerk ESM Cut Off and Merit

An ESM candidate must check the relevant State/UT, category and stage while reading cut-off data. Comparing an ESM score with another State, General category or DESM data can be misleading. Read IBPS Clerk ESM Cut Off 2026; never treat an expected score as official.

Stage 3: Provisional Allotment

After Mains, candidates may be provisionally allotted to a participating bank on the basis of merit-cum-preference, State/UT-wise and category-wise vacancies, reservation guidelines and applicable eligibility conditions. The Main Examination carries 200 marks, which are converted to a score out of 100 for provisional allotment. Prelims marks are excluded from final merit.

Where an online examination is held in different sessions, IBPS normalises the corrected scores using the equi-percentile method. Scores up to two decimal places are used for calculations. A candidate must meet the applicable qualifying requirements and rank sufficiently high for allotment; a raw score should not be treated as the final allotment score.

A provisional allotment is not an offer of employment. Once an allotment is made, a request to change the allotted bank is not entertained under the notified process.

If scores are tied: The notification uses date of birth to determine the merit order between candidates with the same score: the older candidate is placed ahead. This rule does not remove the qualifying or eligibility requirements.

What a reserve list means: IBPS may maintain a reserve list, subject to candidate availability. Being on it is not an appointment or a guaranteed later allotment. Further allotment depends on participating banks reporting vacancies within the list’s validity. The notified list expires one year after provisional allotment or when a fresh provisional allotment is made, whichever is earlier. Candidates outside both the allotment and reserve list are not considered for a later process under that recruitment cycle.

Stage 4: Local Language Proficiency Test

Knowledge of the specified/opted local language of the chosen State/UT is mandatory. Candidates who produce a Class 10 or higher marksheet or certificate showing that they studied that language are exempt from the language test. Candidates without this prescribed documentary exemption must qualify the Local Language Proficiency Test (LLPT) before joining. The test is conducted after qualifying Mains/provisional allotment by an independent body or the allotted bank; it is marks-based and qualifying in nature. Candidates who fail the test will not be offered appointment and will be disqualified. ESM status does not create a separate exemption. Read the IBPS Clerk Local Language Proficiency Test guide.

What language proficiency covers: Candidates must be able to read, write, speak and understand the specified/opted local language. Where a State/UT has more than one listed language, the candidate opts for one from the notification’s Annexure III in the application. Prepare for the language actually selected; speaking another language used in the State does not by itself establish the required proficiency or documentary exemption.

Exam medium and LLPT are different: The language version of the online question paper is selected from the examination-medium options available for the applied State/UT. The English test remains in English. Taking other online tests in English or Hindi does not replace the separate local-language requirement. Use the notification’s examination-medium table for the written tests and Annexure III for the opted local language.

Stage 5: IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026 Document Verification

The allotted bank verifies eligibility documents and the claims made in the online application, including identity, education, category, ESM status and local-language proof. IBPS provisional allotment does not guarantee appointment if the candidate fails verification. The exact list in the allotted bank’s communication will prevail.

Important Documents for Ex-Servicemen

  • Application form and examination call letters, as instructed.
  • Valid photo identity proof, photographs and date-of-birth proof.
  • Educational qualification certificates.
  • Discharge certificate/book or applicable prescribed ESM certificate.
  • Proforma A, B, C or other declaration, wherever applicable.
  • Category/disability certificate, where claimed.
  • Local-language proof, if exemption is claimed.
  • NOC or service-related document, wherever required.

Follow the CRP-CSA-XVI proforma and allotted bank’s instructions. See the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen documents list.

Is There an Interview for IBPS Clerk ESM Candidates?

No. The normal Customer Service Associate recruitment process has no interview. ESM candidates do not face a separate interview merely because they claim Ex-Servicemen reservation.

IBPS Clerk ESM Joining Process

After provisional allotment, the participating bank completes document verification, the applicable local-language test and its own pre-employment formalities, including satisfaction of the allotted bank’s medical-fitness requirements. Issuing the appointment offer, fixing joining requirements, training and posting are decisions of the allotted bank; IBPS has no role in those bank-level formalities.

After receiving the bank’s offer: Read its acceptance, verification and joining instructions and contact the allotted bank about those formalities. Under the notified process, a candidate who does not avail the allotted bank’s appointment offer forfeits the candidature/chance for that process. Do not assume that declining the offer creates a right to another bank allotment.

Common Mistakes ESM Candidates Should Avoid

  • Following the old 190-question Mains pattern.
  • Assuming reservation means exemption from Prelims or Mains.
  • Selecting an incorrect ESM/DESM category.
  • Waiting until results to arrange service documents.
  • Ignoring the specified local-language condition.
  • Treating provisional allotment as final appointment.
