IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026 Stages

  1. Online Preliminary Examination: qualifying and shortlisting stage.
  2. Online Main Examination: marks count for final merit/provisional allotment.
  3. Provisional Allotment: based on merit-cum-preference, category and vacancies.
  4. Eligibility, identity and document verification: carried out by the allotted bank.
  5. Local Language Proficiency Test: a marks-based qualifying test after Mains/provisional allotment but before joining, where applicable.
  6. Appointment formalities: medical fitness, joining and other requirements decided by the allotted bank.

Stage 1: IBPS Clerk ESM Prelims 2026

Prelims is an online screening test. Candidates are shortlisted for Mains according to the standards prescribed by IBPS. Its marks are not carried forward for final merit.

IBPS Clerk Preliminary Exam Pattern 2026

Section Questions Marks Time
English Language 30 30 20 minutes
Numerical Ability 35 35 20 minutes
Reasoning Ability 35 35 20 minutes
Total 100 100 60 minutes

Each section is separately timed. Prepare all three sections instead of depending completely on one strong subject. Read the IBPS Clerk syllabus and exam pattern.

Stage 2: IBPS Clerk ESM Mains 2026

Candidates shortlisted through Prelims appear for the Online Main Examination. This is the decisive written stage because Mains marks are considered for final merit and provisional allotment.

2026 Pattern Alert: Do not use old tables showing 190 questions and 160 minutes. CRP-CSA-XVI Mains has 160 questions for 200 marks in 125 minutes.

Revised IBPS Clerk Main Exam Pattern 2026

Section Questions Marks Time
General/Financial Awareness 40 50 20 minutes
General English 40 40 35 minutes
Reasoning Ability 40 60 35 minutes
Quantitative Aptitude 40 50 35 minutes
Total 160 200 125 minutes

The latest table names the section Reasoning Ability; it does not list “Reasoning Ability & Computer Aptitude” as the current section title.

Negative Marking in IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026

For every wrong answer, one-fourth of the marks assigned to that question is deducted. There is no penalty for an unanswered question. Since questions may carry different marks in Mains, do not describe the penalty as a fixed 0.25 mark for every question.

Does ESM Reservation Change the Exam Process?

No. Eligible ESM/DESM candidates follow the same Prelims and Mains stages. Reservation operates within the notified vacancy and allotment framework; it does not guarantee selection, waive an examination or replace eligibility conditions.

Candidates must select the correct category and prove it with prescribed documents. Read the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen reservation rules and IBPS Clerk ESM State-wise vacancy.

IBPS Clerk ESM Cut Off and Merit

An ESM candidate must check the relevant State/UT, category and stage while reading cut-off data. Comparing an ESM score with another State, General category or DESM data can be misleading. Read IBPS Clerk ESM Cut Off 2026; never treat an expected score as official.

Stage 3: Provisional Allotment

After Mains, candidates may be provisionally allotted to a participating bank on the basis of merit-cum-preference, State/UT-wise and category-wise vacancies, reservation guidelines and applicable eligibility conditions. A provisional allotment is not an offer of employment. Once an allotment is made, a request to change the allotted bank is not entertained under the notified process.

Stage 4: Local Language Proficiency Test

Knowledge of the specified/opted local language of the chosen State/UT is mandatory. The test may be conducted by an independent body or the allotted bank after qualifying Mains/provisional allotment but before joining. It is marks-based and qualifying in nature. A candidate who neither has the required educational proof nor qualifies the test will not receive appointment. The exact exemption proof and test instructions in the official notification/allotted-bank communication will prevail. Read the IBPS Clerk Local Language Proficiency Test guide.

Stage 5: IBPS Clerk ESM Selection Process 2026 Document Verification

The allotted bank verifies eligibility documents and the claims made in the online application, including identity, education, category, ESM status and local-language proof. IBPS provisional allotment does not guarantee appointment if the candidate fails verification. The exact list in the allotted bank’s communication will prevail.

Important Documents for Ex-Servicemen

  • Application form and examination call letters, as instructed.
  • Valid photo identity proof, photographs and date-of-birth proof.
  • Educational qualification certificates.
  • Discharge certificate/book or applicable prescribed ESM certificate.
  • Proforma A, B, C or other declaration, wherever applicable.
  • Category/disability certificate, where claimed.
  • Local-language proof, if exemption is claimed.
  • NOC or service-related document, wherever required.

Follow the CRP-CSA-XVI proforma and allotted bank’s instructions. See the IBPS Clerk Ex-Servicemen documents list.

Is There an Interview for IBPS Clerk ESM Candidates?

No. The normal Customer Service Associate recruitment process has no interview. ESM candidates do not face a separate interview merely because they claim Ex-Servicemen reservation.

IBPS Clerk ESM Joining Process

After provisional allotment, the participating bank completes document verification, the applicable local-language test and its own pre-employment formalities, which may include medical fitness. Issuing the appointment offer, fixing joining requirements, training and posting are decisions of the allotted bank; IBPS has no role in those bank-level formalities.

Common Mistakes ESM Candidates Should Avoid

  • Following the old 190-question Mains pattern.
  • Assuming reservation means exemption from Prelims or Mains.
  • Selecting an incorrect ESM/DESM category.
  • Waiting until results to arrange service documents.
  • Ignoring the specified local-language condition.
  • Treating provisional allotment as final appointment.
