IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Selection Process 2026 – Check all 5 stages, ESM age relaxation, reservation rules, Personality Test, Interview, documents and final merit under CRP PO/MT-XVI.

IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Selection Process 2026 consists of the same recruitment stages applicable to other eligible candidates under CRP PO/MT-XVI. There is no separate examination, separate interview or separate merit list for Ex-Servicemen applying for the Probationary Officer/Management Trainee post.

Eligible candidates have to clear the Online Preliminary Examination, Online Main Examination, mandatory Personality Test and Common Interview before being considered for Provisional Allotment. The Preliminary Examination is used for shortlisting, while the Main Examination and Interview determine the final combined merit.

Ex-Servicemen should also understand an important IBPS PO rule: eligible Ex-Servicemen/Commissioned Officers, including eligible ECOs and SSCOs, may receive 5 years of upper-age relaxation subject to the prescribed military-service conditions, but there is no Ex-Servicemen reservation in the Officers’ Cadre.

IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Selection Process 2026: 5 Stages

The complete IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Selection Process 2026 includes five stages. An Ex-Serviceman does not receive a separate examination route because of ESM status.

Stage Selection Stage Purpose
1 Online Preliminary Examination Shortlisting for Mains
2 Online Main Examination Major scored stage for final selection
3 Personality Test Mandatory before Interview; non-qualifying
4 Common Interview 100-mark scored stage
5 Provisional Allotment Final allotment based on merit, preference and vacancies
Direct Answer: Ex-Servicemen must clear the same Prelims, Mains, Personality Test and Interview process as other eligible IBPS PO candidates. ESM status does not create a separate selection route.

Is IBPS PO Selection Process Different for Ex-Servicemen?

No. The IBPS PO selection stages are not different for Ex-Servicemen. Eligible ESM candidates participate in the same competitive recruitment process prescribed under CRP PO/MT-XVI.

The candidate’s military background may be relevant for claiming the applicable age relaxation and proving eligibility through defence-service documents, but it does not provide:

  • A separate ESM Preliminary Examination
  • A separate ESM Main Examination
  • A separate ESM Interview
  • A separate ESM cut-off simply because of ESM status
  • A separate Ex-Servicemen quota in the Officers’ Cadre

For complete eligibility rules, read the IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Eligibility 2026 guide.

Stage 1: IBPS PO Prelims for Ex-Servicemen

The first stage is the IBPS PO Preliminary Examination. The CRP PO/MT-XVI Prelims examination is scheduled for 22 and 23 August 2026.

Ex-Servicemen candidates have to appear in the same Preliminary Examination and satisfy the qualifying standards prescribed by IBPS to be shortlisted for the Main Examination.

IBPS PO Prelims Exam Pattern 2026

Section Questions Marks Time
English Language 30 30 20 Minutes
Quantitative Aptitude 35 30 20 Minutes
Reasoning Ability 35 40 20 Minutes
Total 100 100 60 Minutes

The three tests are separately timed. The exact candidate-wise date, shift, reporting time and examination venue should be checked from the individual call letter.

Are IBPS PO Prelims Marks Added to Final Merit?

No. Prelims is a shortlisting stage. The marks obtained in the Preliminary Examination are not added to the final combined merit.

Candidates interested in their section-wise performance can also check the IBPS PO Score Card 2026 guide after IBPS releases the relevant marks.

Stage 2: IBPS PO Mains for Ex-Servicemen

Candidates shortlisted after Prelims are called for the Online Main Examination. The IBPS PO Mains Exam 2026 is scheduled for 4 October 2026.

The Main Examination is a decisive stage because its score contributes to final selection and is also used for shortlisting candidates for the subsequent Personality Test and Common Interview process.

IBPS PO Mains Exam Pattern 2026

Section Questions Marks Time
Reasoning 40 60 45 Minutes
General / Economy / Banking Awareness / Digital & Financial Awareness including RBI Circulars 50 60 35 Minutes
English Language 40 20 35 Minutes
Data Analysis & Interpretation 40 60 45 Minutes
Objective Total 170 200 160 Minutes
Descriptive Paper – Essay & Comprehension 2 25 30 Minutes

The current Mains pattern is particularly important because candidates preparing from older material may find a different question and marks distribution.

For difficulty level and expected question trends, check the IBPS PO Exam Analysis 2026.

IBPS PO Negative Marking

For objective tests, a penalty equal to one-fourth of the marks assigned to the question applies for an incorrect answer. No penalty is applied to an unanswered question.

Stage 3: IBPS PO Personality Test 2026

The Personality Test is an important stage in the current CRP PO/MT-XVI selection process.

Candidates shortlisted after the Main Examination are required to appear for a Personality Test in self-report format.

Personality Test Rule: The test is non-qualifying, but appearing in it is mandatory for becoming eligible to participate in the Common Interview.

The personality profile generated through the test can be made available to the Interview panel. IBPS may conduct the process in the prescribed proctored mode or at identified centres according to the official instructions.

Stage 4: IBPS PO Common Interview for Ex-Servicemen

Candidates shortlisted through the Main Examination who complete the mandatory Personality Test are called for the Common Interview.

The Interview is conducted by participating banks and coordinated through the Nodal Bank with the assistance of IBPS.

IBPS PO Interview Marks and Qualifying Percentage

Particular Rule
Total Interview Marks 100 Marks
General / EWS Minimum 40%
SC / ST / OBC / PwBD Minimum 35%
Mains : Interview Weightage 80 : 20
Important ESM Clarification: ESM status alone does not create a separate 35% Interview qualifying standard. The lower 35% threshold is prescribed for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD candidates; otherwise the applicable minimum is 40%.

How is IBPS PO Final Merit Calculated?

The final combined score is based on marks obtained in the Online Main Examination and Common Interview.

Stage Role in Selection Final Weightage
Prelims Shortlisting for Mains Not added
Mains Main scored examination 80%
Personality Test Mandatory before Interview Non-qualifying
Interview Final scored stage 20%

Candidates should therefore not judge their final-selection chances only from their Prelims performance. Mains and Interview performance becomes decisive for the final merit list.

Also check the latest IBPS PO Cut Off 2026 to understand stage-wise qualifying trends.

Stage 5: IBPS PO Provisional Allotment

Candidates who qualify the required recruitment stages and rank sufficiently high in the final combined merit are considered for Provisional Allotment.

Allotment is subject to:

  • Final combined merit
  • Candidate’s bank preferences
  • Actual vacancies reported by participating banks
  • Government guidelines
  • Eligibility verification
  • Other applicable administrative conditions

Provisional allotment does not override eligibility requirements. A candidate can still lose candidature if the prescribed eligibility conditions or required documents are not satisfied.

IBPS PO ESM Reservation vs Age Relaxation 2026

This is the most important rule for Ex-Servicemen considering IBPS PO recruitment.

ESM Benefit / Rule IBPS PO 2026 Status
Can an eligible Ex-Serviceman apply? Yes
Separate ESM exam? No
Separate ESM merit list? No
Reservation for ESM in Officers’ Cadre? No
Age relaxation for eligible ESM/ECO/SSCO? 5 Years
Defence-service documents required? Yes, where applicable
Do Not Confuse Age Relaxation with Reservation:

Receiving an upper-age concession does not mean that a separate Ex-Servicemen vacancy quota exists for the IBPS PO Officers’ Cadre.

IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Age Relaxation 2026

The normal IBPS PO age limit under CRP PO/MT-XVI is 20 to 30 years as on 1 July 2026.

A 5-year upper-age relaxation is prescribed for eligible Ex-Servicemen and Commissioned Officers, including eligible Emergency Commissioned Officers (ECOs) and Short Service Commissioned Officers (SSCOs), subject to the conditions specified in the official notification.

The notification condition covers eligible personnel who have rendered at least the prescribed military service and have been released on completion of assignment, including the applicable release-related conditions specified by IBPS.

Candidates should not assume that every person who has served in the Armed Forces automatically qualifies for the relaxation. The exact service and release conditions must be satisfied.

Is IBPS PO PET Available for Ex-Servicemen?

Ex-Servicemen are not separately listed as a PET-eligible category merely on the basis of ESM status under the current CRP PO/MT-XVI PET notice.

The official IBPS PO Pre-Examination Training notice covers candidates belonging to:

  • Scheduled Caste (SC)
  • Scheduled Tribe (ST)
  • Other Backward Classes (OBC)
  • Minority Communities

An Ex-Serviceman who independently belongs to one of the applicable PET categories should follow the official PET eligibility conditions and the option selected in the online application.

IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Documents Required at Interview

Ex-Servicemen claiming the applicable benefit should keep their defence-service documents ready for the Interview and subsequent verification process.

Released or Retired Ex-Servicemen

  • Service Book or Discharge Book, as applicable
  • Pension Payment Order (PPO), where applicable
  • Documentary proof of rank last/presently held
  • Age-relaxation supporting documents
  • Educational qualification certificates
  • Other documents prescribed in the Interview call letter/notification

Serving Defence Personnel

Candidates still serving in defence and seeking the applicable Ex-Servicemen age benefit must carefully satisfy the service-completion/release conditions prescribed in the CRP PO/MT-XVI notification and produce the required certificate from the competent authority.

Document Advice: Do not wait until the Interview call letter to search for old discharge, service or rank documents. Keep original records and readable photocopies ready in advance.

Common Mistakes Ex-Servicemen Should Avoid

Mistake Correct Approach
Assuming ESM reservation is available in IBPS PO Remember that Officers’ Cadre does not provide ESM reservation.
Confusing age relaxation with reservation Treat the two provisions separately.
Expecting a separate ESM examination Prepare for the same Prelims and Mains examinations.
Ignoring the Personality Test Appearance is mandatory before Interview.
Thinking Prelims marks count in final merit Focus strongly on Mains and Interview after qualifying Prelims.
Not preparing defence documents Keep service/discharge and related records ready.
Assuming ESM status alone gives PET eligibility Check the officially listed PET categories.

IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Selection Process 2026 Final Summary

The IBPS PO Ex-Servicemen Selection Process 2026 consists of the same five recruitment stages applicable to other eligible candidates: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, Personality Test, Common Interview and Provisional Allotment.

There is no reservation for Ex-Servicemen in the IBPS PO Officers’ Cadre. However, eligible Ex-Servicemen and prescribed Commissioned Officers, including eligible ECOs and SSCOs, may receive a 5-year upper-age relaxation subject to the service and release conditions mentioned in CRP PO/MT-XVI.

Prelims marks are not added to final merit. The Main Examination and Interview are used for preparing the combined final score in an 80:20 ratio. The Personality Test is non-qualifying but mandatory before appearing for the Interview.

Ex-Servicemen should therefore focus on the same examination preparation as other PO candidates while separately ensuring that their age-relaxation eligibility and defence-service documents fully satisfy the official IBPS rules.
