IBPS Clerk Selection Process 2026 has two online examination phases: the Preliminary Examination and the Main Examination. Candidates must also satisfy the prescribed local-language, document and eligibility requirements before appointment. The official recruitment is CRP CSA-XVI for Customer Service Associate (CSA) posts in participating public sector banks, covering vacancies of 2027-28.
There is no interview, and only Main Examination marks count towards final merit. Prelims is used for shortlisting. Provisional allotment is based on merit, bank preferences, applicable reservation rules and actual State/UT-wise vacancies; it is not an appointment letter.

IBPS Clerk Selection Process 2026 – Stage-Wise
Understand the two competitive examinations separately from the qualifying checks and bank-allotment process:
- Preliminary Examination: Qualify the required tests and obtain shortlisting for Mains.
- Main Examination: Meet the sectional and total cut-offs and secure a sufficiently high merit position.
- Provisional allotment: IBPS considers merit, preferences, reservation rules and reported vacancies.
- Requirements before appointment: Complete document/eligibility verification and the applicable LLPT or establish exemption.
- Appointment: Follow the allotted bank’s offer and joining instructions.
Selection Flow:
Prelims → Mains → Merit-based provisional allotment → Appointment, subject to local-language and document/eligibility requirements.
LLPT timing: The language test is conducted after qualifying Mains/provisional allotment and before joining. Candidates with the prescribed educational proof are exempt from this test. Follow the bank/designated body’s instructions for the test date and arrangements.
Stage 1 – IBPS Clerk Prelims Exam 2026
The first examination in the IBPS Clerk Selection Process 2026 is an online objective test. Candidates must qualify each of its three tests at the cut-offs decided by IBPS. An adequate number from each category is shortlisted for Mains according to recruitment requirements.

Each section is separately timed. The English Language test is in English; the permitted versions of the other tests depend on the State/UT examination-medium table. Examination medium and the local language opted for LLPT are different requirements.
Are IBPS Clerk Prelims Marks Counted in Final Selection?
No. Prelims marks are not added to the final merit score. A higher Prelims score does not carry an extra merit advantage into Mains, although qualifying and being shortlisted are essential.
Stage 2 – IBPS Clerk Mains Exam 2026
Candidates shortlisted through Prelims appear for the online Main Examination. Its marks determine final merit, but meeting the qualifying cut-offs alone does not guarantee allotment.

The Main Examination has 160 questions for 200 marks in 125 minutes. Each section has its own time limit. The table lists the sections; it does not prescribe the order in which they will appear.

Why IBPS Clerk Mains Is Important for Final Selection
Candidates must obtain a minimum score in each Mains test and a minimum total score. Cut-offs for further consideration depend on State/UT-wise vacancies and the applicable selection rules. A strong total cannot replace a required sectional qualification.
Keep Your Prelims Call Letter for Mains
Retain the authenticated/stamped Prelims call letter and authenticated/stamped copy of your photo ID. These are required for Mains along with the Main Examination call letter and other prescribed documents. Follow the photograph and identity instructions in the call letter and information handout.
Negative Marking in IBPS Clerk 2026
The penalty applies to objective questions in both Prelims and Mains.
For illustration, the penalty for a 1-mark question is 0.25 mark; for a question assigned 2 marks, it is 0.50 mark. These examples explain the formula, not the weight of every question in a section. Do not use a flat 0.25-mark deduction for every Mains question regardless of its assigned marks.
IBPS Clerk Local Language Proficiency Test 2026
Candidates must be proficient in reading, writing, speaking and understanding the specified/opted local language of their selected State/UT. Choose one language from the permitted options in Annexure III when applying.
Language proficiency is required even when a candidate qualifies for exemption from the test. Applying from your home State does not, by itself, establish exemption. See the IBPS Clerk State Selection guide for the State/UT language options.
Who Conducts the IBPS Clerk Local Language Test?
An independent body or the bank conducts the LLPT. It is marks-based but qualifying in nature; its marks are not added to Mains marks for final merit. The test takes place after qualifying Mains/provisional allotment and before joining.
What Happens If a Candidate Fails the Local Language Test?
A candidate who is required to take the LLPT and fails to qualify will not be offered appointment and will be disqualified. A high Mains score does not override this requirement.
Can a Marksheet Be Used as Local Language Proof?
Yes. Candidates who produce a Class 10 or higher marksheet/certificate evidencing that they studied the specified/opted local language are exempt from the language test. The rule is not limited to Class 10 and Class 12 alone.
Without acceptable evidence for this exemption, the candidate must qualify the LLPT. Simply stating that you speak the language does not establish documentary exemption.
Is There a Fixed LLPT Pattern for Every Bank?
The detailed notification does not prescribe one universal question count, duration or passing percentage for all LLPT arrangements. Follow the instructions issued for your test; do not treat the Prelims/Mains negative-marking rule as an LLPT rule.

IBPS Clerk Provisional Allotment 2026
IBPS provisionally allots shortlisted candidates to participating banks using merit-cum-preference, actual State/UT-wise vacancies, applicable reservation rules and recruitment conditions. Vacancies in the notification are indicative; the actual vacancies reported by banks govern allotment.
Bank preferences matter, but a candidate is not guaranteed the first-preference bank. Provisional allotment is also not a guarantee of a preferred branch or city.
Can You Request a Different Bank After Allotment?
The notification does not give candidates a right to demand a different bank after provisional allotment. Follow the allotted bank’s communication rather than assuming that declining its offer will produce another allotment.
Does a Reserve List Guarantee Selection?
No. A reserve list may be maintained subject to candidate availability. Further allotment depends on additional vacancies reported during its validity. Being on the list does not guarantee appointment or a fixed joining date.
IBPS Clerk Document Verification and Eligibility Check
The allotted participating bank checks documents and eligibility before appointment. Carry the prescribed originals and self-attested photocopies, together with any additional records requested by that bank. Admission to an examination or provisional allotment does not prove that all eligibility conditions have been accepted.
Documents Candidates Should Keep Ready
- System-generated printout of the submitted application, including the corrected version where applicable.
- Valid photo identity proof and date-of-birth proof.
- Graduation or recognised equivalent qualification certificates and marksheets.
- Class 10 or higher language-study evidence, when claiming LLPT exemption.
- SC/ST/OBC-NCL, EWS and disability certificates in the prescribed formats, as applicable.
- Computer-literacy evidence through the qualification/subject route permitted in the notification.
- Ex-servicemen service, discharge/release and prescribed proforma documents, where applicable.
- Employer NOC for the employment categories covered by the notification, where applicable.
- Photographs, allotment/joining communication and any other documents requested by the bank.
Important distinction: The registration deadline and eligibility cut-off dates are different. Do not assume that an extension of registration changes the qualifying date for education or age. The official application instructions specify 1 August 2026 for age and 21 August 2026 for educational qualifications.
Missing or invalid documents can lead to cancellation. Reserved-category candidates considered against unreserved vacancies on own merit must still produce the category certificate required for their registered category.
Is There an Interview in IBPS Clerk Selection Process 2026?
No. CRP CSA-XVI does not include a personal interview. Document verification and a qualifying language test are not interview stages and do not create additional interview marks.

Provisional allotment is not the end of the process. Complete the allotted bank’s verification requirements and, unless exempt, qualify the LLPT before joining.
How Are Scores Normalised and Converted?
When the examination is held in different sessions, corrected scores are normalised using the equi-percentile method. Calculations use scores up to two decimal places. For provisional allotment, the Mains total of 200 marks is converted to a score out of 100.
Illustration: If the applicable processed Mains score is 122 out of 200, its conversion is 122 ÷ 2 = 61 out of 100. This illustrates scaling only; it does not calculate normalisation from an estimated raw score.
What Happens When Two Candidates Have the Same Score?
The notification uses date of birth to resolve a score tie: the older candidate is placed higher in merit.
